11 April | NIRS | Grandmothers slam NSW child protection laws

By Warren Barnsley

A group of Koori women campaigning against high rates of child removals in New South Wales has lashed new child protection legislation that recently passed parliament.

The state Community Services Minister Pru Goward says the legislation means the department must consider adoption where the court rules a child cannot return to its parents or family.

She says this allows stability for the child.

But Aunty Hazel Collins from Grandmothers Against Removals says the Government shouldn’t have the right to adopt Koori kids out.

Grandmothers Against Removal will hold a rally against the Department of Community Services in Tamworth today.
